Catfish and the Bottlemen

Catfish and the bottlemen are an indie rock band formed from Wales. They have created their brand as being very rock orientated and are often associated as being black and simplistic. Their logo epitomises this, as it is a simple design of just their names in capital letters, with very little detail. It is in a simple white font with a black background. This makes it have an impression without it being too loud or over the top. Speaking to NME magazine, lead singer Van McCann said "I feel like everybody started thinking too outside the box trying to be arty and different. We wanted to stay inside the box." This shows their reserved approach in how they represent themselves.

The way they dress and present themselves in photoshoots also play a big role in how they want to come across to the public. They always wear black clothing, often leather which portrays their rock genre of music and simplistic persona. Their facial expressions are also very serious and they often give a hard stare down the camera, as they want to represent themselves as being more about the music than anything else.

In terms of what they are like in the media and how they speak to the press, they are quite outspoken and true to themselves. They have branded themselves as not scared of causing controversy and as they don't have a mainstream audience like pop artists, they don't need to present themselves as as clean and perfect. In 2015 Van McCann publicly criticised the pop group One Direction, saying “You lot won a competition! I’ve sat in a band of seven years while you queued up outside Manchester Arena the did a bit of disco to a man behind a table who then put a few dollar bills down your jacket,” said McCann. “Everything they do is preconceived and controlled. It’s live pantomime.” The is an example of how Catfish and the Bottlemen aren't afraid be controversial, and is now part of their mage.

They have also branded themselves as being one of the lead bands to revive rock music. In an interview with NME they said they're gigs are full of
“40-year old men who tell me: ‘I’ve been waiting for a band like yours since Oasis’.” They have also said that they "can't relate to the stuff in the charts".

Their social media is also representative of how they've branded themselves, as the mainly tweet about their upcoming tours, gig performances and pictures of venues they're playing at. There is very little personal touch to it as they are selling their music to their following rather than themselves as people.

Catfish and the Bottlemen's branding has certainly singled them out from the crown and has allowed them to attract a niche set of loyal fans. While they might not be making as much money as pop artists through commercialism, they are definitely achieving their goal of giving off old school rock vibes which has led to them being very successful.
